Aaron Rai Clinches Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating his compatriot in a dramatic play-off following a rollercoaster last day of competition.

Rai sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the win, echoing his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win over the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

The champion entered the final round with a single stroke advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved a stroke clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last hole.

Play-Off Decider

That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more individual. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it is. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

Notable Performances

Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to do, finishing one shot short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a stunning 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever score on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and an eagle.

Højgaard fired six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of leading the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
