Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
